ABOUT US
The society always supports a full calendar of events. Our regular speaker led presentations usually held at Heywood United Reformed Church, Towngate, and are a favourite for members and guests to find out about all aspects of local history. In summer months we offer a walk and talk history ramble around interesting parts of the village.
For those who like to be involved in a more hands on approach to history, you can join our Wednesday evening research meetings at Heywood United Reform Church lower meeting room on most Wednesday evenings throughout the year. This group breaks for Easter, Christmas and a couple of summer months.
CURRENT NEWS
OPEN DAY – APRIL Saturday 20th 2024
- Over 100 new images of Northowram from the Les Brayshaw collection will be shown. 3.00pm
- ‘Then and Now’ slide show (all day) – Our collection of old photographs of the Northowram area that can be compared to the same views today.
- Illustrated talk utilising old maps an aerial views of Northowram (1.30pm) – Find out some of the major changes to the landscape of the village going back in time.
- Graveyard tour (11.00am) Explore this fascinating site in a short, guided tour. Did you know the graveyard is ‘host’ to a gangster, millionaires, murder victims and relatives of a 1970’s pop star? Weather permitting!
- Exhibition (all day) featuring many local buildings, some of which are no longer with us!
A well attended event attracting many new faces throughout the day. Our new display screens were a real bonus in being able to display an extensive amount of our images and maps. The on going ‘Then and Now’ projected display was popular as was the presentation showing old maps and aerial images. Light refreshments were available throughout the event.
