This event is to be held at Heywood Church‘s grade 2 listed building and is on the weekend of 11th and 12th September.
The exciting programme includes:
• An illustrated talk (booking required) – listen to a few fascinating stories about local residents. Hear about the Northowram man transported to Australia for a crime committed in Shibden Valley, as well as the man who murdered his pregnant wife and Halifax’s last town crier.
• A ‘Then and Now’ slide show – consider lots of enthralling old photographs of the Northowram area and compare them to the same views today.Everyone can recognise the village fish and chip shop today but what did ‘Ye Olde Fish and Chip Shop’ look like nearly 100 years ago. Also, do you know where the Crown Brewery was and what it is today.
• A graveyard tour (booking required) – explore this fascinating site in a short, guided tour. Hear the history for yourself – from the remnants of the first church built over 350 years ago, to some of the occupants in the graveyard. Did you know Heywood has a gangster, millionaires and relatives of a 1970’s pop star, as well as an unmarked plot with many child graves?
• An exhibition – featuring the dissenting minister Oliver Heywood and many of the local buildings associated with Heywood.
