Heywood Churchyard – Stories from the Grave

For once the Northowram Historical Society was blessed with a bright warm evening for its walk and talk around Heywood United Reform church graveyard which took place on Thursday 18th May 2018.

Alan Rushworth was the walk leader who had researched many of the graves and the interesting stories that surrounds the people buried there. This event really attracted a large audience as 83 people attended. Alan took everyone around the graveyard whilst pointing out particular interesting graves and facts about the church that relates back to Oliver Heywood time. Everyone was then invited into the church to see a visual presentation that the expanded the stories Alan had previously eluded to at the graves. There were stories of earlier ancestors of the pop star Kiki Dee, a Town Crier, a mobster and stories concerning war fatalities to name but a few.
Alan was thanked by Peter Thornton a committee member and thanks were given by Marilyn Burton on behalf of the church. Also George Bowers announced that a novel he has just published is available for sale now. Refreshments were served, giving time for everyone to enjoy a get together. One hundred pounds was raised from the event and given to the church to help continue the clean up and maintenance of the graveyard.
